Oil-ternative® Dust & Road Stabilizer
Cut Water Use and Road Costs on Unpaved Sites
Bio-based dust control made from waste cooking oil. Fewer water truck trips, lower operational costs, and longer-lasting results on unpaved roads and industrial sites.
A Concentrate That Replaces Repeat Water Runs
Oil-ternative® Dust & Road Stabilizer is a bio-based concentrate made from waste cooking oil collected on Vancouver Island. Mixed with water and sprayed with standard equipment, it binds surface material and controls airborne dust on gravel roads, yards, and industrial sites. Most sites need only a handful of applications across a full season, in place of daily or weekly water-truck runs.
Water-Only Dust Control Is an Ongoing Cost
Plain water evaporates fast and needs constant reapplication. Chloride salts corrode vehicles and equipment and carry soil-salination risk. Here is how a 2025 pilot on a Vancouver Island industrial site compared the two approaches.
Water-Only Application
- Multiple truck trips per day in dry months
- Dust returns within hours in heat and wind
- High diesel and labour cost per application
- No lasting bond to the road surface
Chloride Salt Treatment
- Corrodes vehicles, equipment, and rebar
- Raises soil salination risk near waterways
- Performance drops off after rain events
- Runoff can affect surrounding vegetation
Oil-ternative® Dust & Road Stabilizer
- Fewer applications across a full season
- Penetrates and binds the road surface material
- No chloride, no corrosion risk
- Runs on the spray equipment sites currently own
Two Ways to Get It Applied
Full Service
We Handle the Application
Our team assesses the site, mixes the concentrate to spec, and applies it with our spray truck and trained operators. A good fit for sites without their own water truck or spray equipment.
Self Service
Apply It With Your Own Crew
We supply the concentrate in pails, drums, or IBC totes. Mix it with water at a 1:1 ratio and apply with the spray equipment your operation runs today.
Most sites need roughly 3 applications per season (April through September), depending on surface material, traffic, and weather.
What a 2025 Pilot Found
Modeled results compared to water-only treatment across a full road section, reported by ESE Magazine and CBC.
99.5%
Less water used compared to water-only application
65%
Lower operational cost, based on modeled pilot results
98.5%
Lower GHG emissions from tanker truck operations
22%
Stronger dust suppression versus water alone
Pilot conducted on a 750-metre section of unpaved road at a Vancouver Island eco-industrial site, modeled across a full two-kilometre section.
Made From Oil That Would Otherwise Go to Waste
Every batch starts as waste cooking oil collected from restaurants across Vancouver Island. We collect it, filter it, and process it into Oil-ternative® at our facility in Duncan, BC. What used to be a disposal problem becomes a product that controls dust on roads in the same communities the oil came from.

How much water does it actually save?
In a 2025 pilot, modeled results across a full road section showed up to 99.5% less water use compared to water-only dust control, mainly because the treated surface needs far fewer reapplications.
How many applications does a site need per season?
Most sites need roughly 3 applications between April and September. Frequency depends on surface material, traffic volume, and weather.
Does it work with our current equipment?
Yes. The concentrate mixes with water at a 1:1 ratio and applies with standard spray equipment. We also offer full-service application if a site does not have its own water truck.
Is it safer than chloride-based dust suppressants?
Oil-ternative® contains no chloride salts, so it does not carry the corrosion or soil-salination risks associated with chloride-based products.
Where is it made?
It is manufactured in Duncan, BC, from waste cooking oil collected at restaurants across Vancouver Island.
