What Is a Circular Economy?
A circular economy keeps materials in use for as long as possible, eliminates waste at the design stage, and regenerates natural systems rather than depleting them. It is the opposite of the “take, make, dispose” linear model that has defined industrial production for generations.
In a linear system, a resource travels in one direction: extracted, manufactured into a product, used, then discarded. Value is created once and destroyed at end of life. In a circular system, every output from one process becomes the input for another. Waste signals a design flaw, and the system is redesigned to prevent it from occurring.
For BC businesses and municipalities, the circular economy is no longer an abstract ideal. The Problem
Where Waste Cooking Oil Goes Without Circular Systems
Left unmanaged, waste cooking oil (WCO) causes real harm. Poured down drains, it solidifies in sewer systems and contributes to blockages that cost municipalities thousands of dollars in emergency repairs. Discharged into waterways, it disrupts aquatic ecosystems and attracts regulatory penalties.
Sending WCO to landfill is the other default outcome, and it wastes a genuinely recoverable resource. Restaurants across Vancouver Island and BC generate significant volumes of cooking oil weekly, yet compliant, convenient disposal options have historically been limited outside major urban centres.
Regulatory pressure is increasing across BC municipalities. Grease trap compliance requirements, FOG (fats, oils, and grease) management bylaws, and provincial organics diversion targets are all moving in the same direction. The Process
Ergo’s Closed Loop: How It Works
Our process is designed around one principle: every litre of waste cooking oil collected on Vancouver Island should return to the local economy as a useful product. Here is how that happens, from collection through to the finished product in a contractor’s hands.
Restaurant
Your kitchen generates waste cooking oil during regular operations.
Free Collection
Ergo collects at no charge on a scheduled route. We serve restaurants across Victoria, run pickups for kitchens up in Nanaimo, and collect here in Duncan, along with Mill Bay and the Cowichan Valley.
Refining
WCO is processed at Ergo’s Duncan, BC facility.
Upcycling
Refined oil becomes the Oil-ternative® line of bio-based industrial products, derived from food waste and manufactured locally in BC, Canada.
Back into BC Market
Products are sold back into the BC market, replacing petroleum-based alternatives in construction, paving, and road maintenance.
Annual Certificate
Each restaurant partner receives an annual recycling certificate documenting volume diverted and CO₂ savings tracked.
